Some men need
fertility treatments because they have a poor sperm. They are either small in
size, or they don't swim well, but these drugs can be expensive and sometimes
don't work. What is new in this area is revealed by researchers from the
University of “Sheffield” in a recent study that eating tomatoes can enhance
the quality of sperm by up to 40-50 percent.
According to the Daily Mail, the
main ingredient found in Lycopene tomatoes, which give it a red color, helped
improve sperm quality. The study involved 56 healthy men, aged between 19 to
30, of whom more than half were found to have a poor quality sperm. The
researchers placed Lycopene in capsules and asked 28 men to take two each
morning and evening. In return, 28 men were given a placebo. After 12 weeks,
the men who took the Lycopene capsules had 40 percent faster sperm, the
researchers found. Speed is important for egg fertilization.
The results
indicated that eating tomatoes and its main components improves sperm shape,
size and ability to swim, which may give men a better chance of successful
fertilization.
According to the newspaper, the amount of “Lycopene” taken by
the men in the study equivalent to five cans of tomatoes cooked per day,
according to researchers, taken in the form of capsules better than eating
tomatoes directly. “We didn't really expect that at the end of the study there
would be any difference in the sperm quality between those who took Lycopene
and those who didn't," said Alan Passy, a professor of masculinity at the
University of Sheffield and lead author of the study. “The improvement in
morphology - the size and shape of sperm - has been dramatic. Sperm volume has
doubled naturally, so, it will have a better chance of fertilizing an
egg." "The volume has moved from 7.5 percent to 13.5 percent,"
he said. Previous studies have found that Lycopene lowers blood pressure and
reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men.

Experts believe that tomatoes may
improve sperm quality because the antioxidants they contain prevent sperm
damage, so, they retain their size and shape and swim better. An earlier study
found those men who drank tomato juice for six weeks had sperm moving faster
and more efficiently.
The scientists explained that taking "Lycopene” in
the form of capsules is better than eating cooked tomatoes because the stomach
absorbs capsules easier. "This was a small study. We need to repeat the
work in larger trials, but the results are very encouraging," said Dr.
Elizabeth Williams, a member of the research team. "The next step is to
repeat the study in men with fertility problems, see if Lycopene can increase
sperm quality for these men, and whether it helps couples fertilize without the
need for traditional fertility treatments, whether drugs or vaccinations.
